The much-anticipated agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, the two major golf circuits, to end the schism that has plagued the sport, has hit a significant snag in recent hours following the resignation of Jimmy Dunne.
Pga and Liv
As reported by the American outlet Sports Illustrated, Dunne, the chief architect of the agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, announced his immediate resignation from the PGA Tour executive on Monday.
He stated that “there has been no progress on the agreement with the PIF fund (the financial entity behind LIV Golf)” and emphasized that, since players like Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth have joined the PGA Tour executive, “my vote and role are redundant.” It’s worth noting that the signing of this agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf was originally scheduled for December 31st, but they ultimately decided to extend the deadline.
However, with Jimmy Dunne’s resignation, the signing now faces complications, prolonging the schism that has developed in golf in recent years. The saga of golf’s evolving landscape took a significant turn in 2019 with the revelation of plans for a new tour aiming to challenge the dominance of the PGA Tour. This league, dubbed the Premier Golf League, made its intentions public, prompting a response from PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, who hinted at potential consequences for golfers opting to participate in this rival venture.
Amidst these developments, in 2020, the PGA European Tour and the PGA Tour forged a “strategic alliance,” aiming to collaborate on various fronts such as commercial ventures, scheduling, and prize allocations for their respective memberships.
Meanwhile, the Premier Golf League engaged in discussions with Saudi investors for financial backing. However, Golf Saudi, a branch of the Public Investment Fund, chose a different path, establishing its own entity in 2020 with aspirations to create a global professional league, often referred to as the “Super Golf League.” This venture officially debuted in October 2021 under the banner of LIV Golf Investments, appointing former professional golfer Greg Norman as its CEO.
LIV Golf’s emergence has drawn comparisons to the aborted European Super League in football, illustrating the seismic shifts occurring in both sports. In July 2022, LIV Golf took a formal step by applying for inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking, a process known to span between one to two years from application to approval and the allocation of OWGR points.
Further cementing its presence, LIV Golf entered into a strategic partnership with the MENA Tour in October 2022. While initially aimed at providing ranking points for LIV Golf events, adjustments to the MENA Tour meant that events in 2022 would not receive points pending review.
