Rory McIlroy has been one of the biggest critics of this Tour, as well as the golfers who decided to join LIV Golf, since the first day of LIV Golf’s creation. The Northern Irishman seems to be slowly changing his mind. Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, McIlroy regrets his statements, considering that he understands that some golfers did not have as much financial power or ‘name’ as he and Tiger Woods. Thinking about their future, many decided to join LIV Golf and earn much more money. Although most of them were heavily criticized, it seems that many are now changing their minds.
‘I think at this point, I was maybe a little judgmental of the guys who went to LIV golf at the start, and I think it was a bit of a mistake on my part because I now realise that not everyone is in my position or in Tiger Wood’s position.’ He said on the Stick to Football podcast, as quoted by dailymail.co.uk!
Looking at the current situation, the main motive of every athlete is mainly money. Rory McIlroy realized this by analyzing current events on the golf scene. A huge number of popular golfers from the PGA Tour have decided to make the ‘unpopular’ decision and join LIV Golf! The Saudis offered them huge sums of money, and it was difficult for some to resist such offers. The last departure in the series, Jon Rahm’s, has caused concern among golf fans, considering that it could cause a domino effect and “force” a few more to follow the same path. That’s what fans fear, as well as PGA Tour leaders. They are aware that they have to take some steps if they want to prevent such things.
‘We all turn professionals to making a living playing the sports that we do, and I think that’s what I realised over the last two years.’
The Northern Irish do not want to judge such people or their decisions anymore. Rory believes he made a big mistake by criticizing individuals who decided to leave the PGA Tour and join LIV Golf.
‘I can’t judge people for making that decision, so if I regret anything, it was probably being too judgmental at the start.’
It was clear that after the departure of Jon Rahm to LIV Golf, Rory did not criticize the Spaniard. In fact, he asked for a change in the rules for the Ryder Cup, so that Jon Rahm would have a chance to play in the Ryder Cup. Looking at their shared memories, as well as the recent success at the Ryder Cup, it was hard to imagine that Rory would be critical of Jon Rahm.
Rory McIlroy: I’ve gone through the last two years with this altruistic approach
The Northern Irishman is aware that he has no power to change someone’s mind. He has had his vision since the first day, which is changing a bit. Rory McIlroy emphasized that it is necessary to accept the current events and focus on his game. He wants to enter 2024 much more focused and his goal is to make great success. The whole situation around LIV Golf and the PGA Tour confused Rory a bit and took his focus away from what he loves most: Playing golf. Many believe that this could be felt in his game in most tournaments. McIlroy is aware that this time he must have a different mindset and put more emphasis on himself and his performances, rather than on the conflict and chaos that reigns on the golf scene.

‘I’ve gone through the last two years with this altruistic approach where I’ve looked at the world the way I’ve wanted to see it.
Ultimately, you can say what you want and do what you want, but at the end of the day, you’re not going to be able to change people’s minds. You’re never going to make them decide based on what you say.
I wouldn’t say I’ve lost the fight against LIV, but I’ve just accepted the fact that this is part of our sport now.’
The best thing for the golf world would be a merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Although Dec. 31 was originally the deadline for a final deal, in a recent letter from Jay Monahan to PGA Tour golfers, he emphasized that the deal will take some time. Monahan is nevertheless an optimist and hopes to find a common language. If we watch quality golfers on both Tours, without strong competition, it will surely spoil the quality of golf and reduce interest. Therefore, let’s hope that the future can bring more beautiful stories for golf and make everyone happy, both fans and golfers. Rory McIlroy is one of those who sincerely hopes for better days for the world of golf. The current situation does not suit anyone.
The next few months will best tell us what we can expect, and whether we have the right to be optimistic about the future of golf. The PGA Tour is afraid that LIV Golf will “lure” a few more golfers, so let’s hope that the final deal is waiting for us soon.
