Nick Kyrgios ripped articles about his possible retirement as “garbage” and indicated that he absolutely plans on playing again.
On Tuesday, The Sydney Morning Herald published a column written by Kyrgios. Kyrgios, who has played just one tournament since the start of the 2023 season due to knee and wrist injuries, wrote in the column that part of him knows “my time in the sport may be over.” Also, Kyrgios wrote that he has “reached a point where life after tennis is a prospect that excites me.”
Naturally, several media outlets ran headlines with the story that Kyrgios not playing again is a strong possibility.
Kyrgios: I’m coming back, don’t stress
Kyrgios, who will be turning 29 in April, also uploaded a video on his Instagram Story, in which he further addressed his future. In the video, Kyrgios acknowledged that the last year hasn’t been easy but added that he is “coming back” and that there is no need for his fans to stress.
“I have woken up today and realized about some articles going around and saying that I am retired and that I’m not going to play anymore. I just want to just clear it up, it’s absolute nonsense,” Kyrgios said in a video posted on his Instagram Story.
“Yes, the last year has been tough with injury, my knee, my wrist, but I’m hungry as ever, constantly rehabbing, in the gym. Part of the reason why I am commentating and doing all these things around AO is to still feel that fire and still be a part of it.
“So I still wanted to let everyone know, all my fans I’m coming back, stay tuned, but there’s plenty left in the tank. Don’t stress.”
At this year’s Australian Open, Kyrgios is working as an analyst and commentator for Eurosport. So far, Kyrgios has been widely praised for his work in tennis broadcasting.
